And in psychology, we call these developmental cascades.
Early experiences feeding into later ones, building on themselves over time.
And that's also the hopeful part, because if these patterns are learned...
and they build gradually, they can also be shifted.
So the teenage years matter far more than we give them credit for.
And they're where the foundations of our later relationships are taking shape.

Yeah, we tend to assume a child's future is shaped mostly by their parents.
But what our research keeps showing us is that we actually grow up inside a whole web of relationships.
That's the relational ecology.
Parents matter enormously, but so do our friends, our partners, our teachers, our coaches, our mentors.
In one of our studies that followed young people across two countries, those who had strong relationships with both their parents and their friends as teenagers went on to have the healthiest romantic relationships in their 20s.
And it was having both that mattered most.
So I think of teenage friendships as a kind of apprenticeship where we practice how to be close to people, refining those skills in preparation for relationships to come.
