It's a really kind of sensitive subject, really, when it comes to data centers, the use of water in cooling.
And there's a lot of talk about closed-loop systems and kind of the removal of using water in data centers.
I think water use is...
I think we're perhaps still a little scared of it.
You know, it's still a little scared of talking about using water in cooling data centres because, you know, electricity, of course, if you're able to get your energy from a fully renewable source, be that solar, wind, you know, hydroelectric, then, you know, there's not necessarily any water used in the generation of that electricity.
you know fantastic um that then there's there's not necessarily a drawback you know in using fully dry systems but if you're somewhere where you're getting a lot of your energy from uh either gas fired coal fire or nuclear power still power stations there's still a a decent amount of water that is involved in the generation of that electricity and then of course you've got transmission losses from the power station to the actual uh to the site itself so
there's still a lot of water being used in that process and actually the use of that water to generate power is less efficient than just using it to cool the load at source at the end point that you're dealing with.
So we're not necessarily solving the use of water in data centres by running fully dry systems.
It's potentially
just moving the problem elsewhere and finding a less efficient way to use that water.
So kind of our philosophy has always been using a little bit of water at the very hottest days of the year that is a much more sustainable and energy efficient practice when it comes to cooling data centers.
You know the the days of running a pouring water over a heat exchanger on indirect evaporative systems are long, long gone.
You know we can't use water irresponsibly in that way as as we did years ago, but.
To to just use a little bit of water at, you know, from 35 degrees ambient upwards just to just to trim the top of the load off.
You know when you when you've got 50 to 100 hours a year in in London where it exceeds that, you know,
We're not, we're not talking about the kind of the, the, the level of water consumption we're talking about in the power station.
plenty of reasons why not to use water.
But where you can, then it's available.
And you mentioned as well, talking about retrofitting buildings and using existing installations such as warehouses and old data centres, office blocks, all sorts of, you know, the most efficient and carbon efficient data centre is one that is in a building that's already built.
