It's 1707.
And interestingly and importantly for our discussions, relevantly.
Scotland retained some of the trappings of the nation-state.
It retained its legal system, it retained its education system, and it retained its church.
These three pillars.
So that is the background in that Scotland, although it became part of Great Britain and part of the United Kingdom in the end of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as it eventually became.
It never gave up some of the trappings of the nation state.
And I think that's important in the context of how the debate played out in 2014.
Then you fast forward to 1885, I'll be quick.
And you have administrative devolution in 1885.
So until that point, everything is run directly from London.
Then it starts being run from Scotland by the Scottish Office, lots of aspects of Scotland.
But the crucially the decisions are still taken at Westminster.
Then you skip forward a long way to, as you say, the 1997 election that Kirsty and Jeremy were talking about on a thoroughly entertaining uh episode of Old Newscast, which, if you haven't heard it, newscasters, you should listen to.
And the people immediately after the 97 election, there's a referendum in Scotland.
Scotland votes for the Scottish Parliament.
As Kirsty says in this famous phrase of John Smith, it was the settled will of the Scottish people, is how it was described.
