New York, we call it spousal maintenance or spousal support.
California calls it alimony, New Jersey calls it alimony, but it's the same thing.
It's a payment made by a moneyed spouse to a non-moneyed spouse when there's a disparity in incomes.
There are in New York 14 factors in the domestic relations law that govern spousal support or alimony.
One of them is what you just described, which which we call that diminished lifetime earning capacity.
So diminished lifetime earning capacity is when a person has made decisions by virtue of the marriage that their long-term earning capacity has now been impaired.
So it's not just a short-term thing, it's a longer-term thing.

So if I say to you, you can borrow my
Car tomorrow, okay.
I've made you a promise.
If you now cancel the car you had, and then I turn around and I say, Oh, I'm sorry, you can't use my car now, okay.
You've now detrimentally relied on my promise.
So now I've created damages to you.
