Wouldn't a cleaner policy be to pair minimum wage increases with targeted tax relief for low-paid workers so more of the rise actually lands in workers' pockets?

Yeah, and I guess the other thing is, you know, what Paul is suggesting is a fairly command and control type economy there where, you know, you're controlling wages and prices in a way or certainly, yeah, well, wages and prices in a way.

The other thing is not everybody necessarily spends that, do they, Alan?

Although I guess if it comes through in wages, the government does take a chunk.

If two people earn the same economic income but pay very different tax because one can structure it through companies, trusts, capital gains or super, is that really fair?

Should tax systems focus on eliminating arbitrage by taxing income consistently regardless of form?

and let progressivity come from explicit payments instead of complex tax rules.

there is an element of equalizing all that around it.

Although, you know, the person who tries to restructure their affairs and get paid through companies, taxes, capital gains or super, there's all sorts of, you know, there's all sorts of small but important differences in that.

Super's a good example.

If you're 33, then structuring your fares to get more money through super doesn't benefit you for the best part of 40 years.
