sometimes right this can be a problem because it can be almost a pre-programmed action right i need to attack the space behind the back line okay my teammate has the ball i go but without really having the sensitivity to the actual particular dynamics of that situation and which would then inform you to okay maybe i need to make some kind of delay on the action maybe i even go close to the teammate to help him solve that problem
whatever that potential might be.
Because it's very tempting for coaches and also very effective, and we've talked about this kind of idea before, to clean up the communication is to make patterns, to make automations and rotations.
between, for example, it could be three, the three players on the left could be like the right eight, the right back and the right winger could have set rotations between them to make those situations familiar so that they can execute, they can understand each other's signals well, and then try and gain advantages by that.
But, you know, there's different ways to play football.
There's very different styles of football, but
What is important, whether you play long ball, short ball, more fluid rotations, more static positional play, you attack wide, you attack the center, it's important, or it seems paramount, that the players understand what each other are doing.
Right, which leads coaches and analysts and technical staff and whoever to really place a huge amount of emphasis on this point, right, of really hammering home and training situations that the players are training contexts, team environments, where the players become expert in understanding each other.
And when you see great teams play, that's what's happening, right?
The players are really synced in.
They can understand each other.
the possibilities of what their teammates will do.
They make compensating movements that will gain advantages for the team.
And again, regardless of style, whatever, this is happening, right?
The players are functioning well together.
They're reading each other.
What's interesting to me, and I think becoming maybe interesting in this moment in football and in football coaching theory, look, we've talked about it.
There's a lot of talk about the game's changing right now.
We're in an interesting moment in football where perhaps prevailing systems or prevailing ideas, I won't say dogmas because that's probably a little bit loaded, but prevailing wisdom is breaking down a little bit.
We've talked about the whole Guardiola and positional thing, and that's reductive, but we all know what we mean when we talk about it, when we say that, into this moment where, okay, what's happening now?
