You can dispute that and say there's some peripheries on the edges of that.
But just for argument's sake, he's got a 180 field of vision that's in front of him and to the sides.
And that's generally where he's going to try and make some kind of layoff action or take a first touch.
But also, of course, defenders are reading cues.
We've talked about this already.
Defensive actions are based on reading intentions and signals and intercepting the messages of the attacking team.
And they are primed to act.
Absolutely, because defensive actions are primed to the zone where the ball receiver is looking, right?
Because that's where they expect it.
So why not?
And not just shadow passing, because sometimes a dummy is not always applicable, but any kind of first touch play, or it could be second touch, but often it would be first touch, into the shadow of the receiver, right?
The 180, that is their shadow.
So a flick, we see these all like guys like Firmino, Benzema, like actually any really good attacking player.
And generally speaking, you'll see a lot of what I would call shadow play.
So not just shadow passing, just it's shadow play.
A shadow play is a first touch into their own shadow, right?
So a little flick down the side, little back heel.
So any kind of pass that goes behind them basically.
And this, of course, has huge deceptive advantage over the opponent because when you do a backheel or a flick or something like this, you play into your own shadow, the opponent doesn't expect it.
So, again, for me, this is a very measurable, definable, and coachable principle that can be essentially systematized.
