We were in and out for a week of pediatrician's office and urgent cares and ERs.
And everything's inconclusive.
They're telling us it's just some virus.
He was at sleepaway camp two weeks ago.
He might have picked something up.
All the blood work looks fine.
Just as his mother, I just knew.
Like something was not right.
And after a series of tests and MRIs, we found that he had something called ADEM, which is like acute dissimilated encephalitis.
And basically, kind of like MS, there was this virus that kicked off his immune system and his body started attacking itself and his entire brain and spinal cord was inflamed.
And that began a 40-day basically hospital stay where it went where we were very close to losing him.
He was literally dying in my arms to then turning around, regaining some function, but then entering into a severe state of psychosis.
Oh, my gosh.
Nothing that resembled my son.
It was.
But also right alongside with it was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life because I was able to see the community that I've built around me that showed up for us in a way that I can't even describe.
The way that I was able to advocate for my son and myself, the faith that I was able to lean on,
It was like my entire life had prepared me for that moment.
And it was then the whole book took a whole other shape, as you can imagine.
And he's a miracle today.
