That's scary to see us moving backwards towards that.

It's just a constant conversation.

I had conversations last week with them.

You know, it's difficult.

It's difficult when any one part of a family sees the world slightly different from everybody else.

I think, I mean, my next book is about this.

I think it's really difficult having an artist in your family when you're a family of complete non-creatives.

And the next novel is really, really going in depth with this to look at what that looks like.

I've met a few other writers recently who are from big families where they're the only kind of weirdo in the family.

And that just must be really hard for people to get their head around.

So there's not just the religious differences.

I'm from a family of Presbyterians, but I'm also from a family of engineers, very logical engineers.

And I actually have an essay in the new edition of Tolka, a literary journal that's coming out in two weeks' time, about trying to understand my daddy through... I got hold of his O-level copy of The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy, which he had annotated down the side.

And my dad was the most logical engineering brain ever.

And using his notes to try and work out what was what was going on in his head and how he saw art and metaphor.

And that was such a brilliant process.

My daddy's not around anymore, so I can't ask him.

But we were starting before he died.
