In the book, it's referred to the dumping ground for everything we didn't want to deal with after 98.
Yeah, absolutely.
Because we can't bury our trauma.
It's always going to bubble up.
And there there's a haunted island of people stuck between life and death.
There's a desperately sad suicide island, which I wanted to put in there because our suicide statistics in the north are horrific.
And this is the one bit where fact and fiction isn't blurred.
Two of the islands actually are real.
So that's based on the Japanese suicide forest where people can go to conveniently and take their own lives.
So that doesn't seem unbelievable to me that it would be repurposed in a northern context.
The one that really struck me was the island where the women are sleeping.
Yeah.
And that's real as well, Darville.
So I've thought a lot about Margaret Atwood said when she was writing The Handmaid's Tale that there was nothing in there that hadn't happened somewhere in the world to women.
And I repurposed some of these things in my island.
So on that island, these are women who've been through so much trauma, they've gone into a kind of comatose state.
And that's called resignation syndrome.
And it's been documented around the world in post-trauma contexts.
