So she loves these islands because they feel like a sanctuary to her as well.
And then we meet Rosemary, who, in a very nice way, is a bit of a cow.
And she's the oldest sister.
She escapes when she's 18 and moves back to the mainland and terrorises her Robert, John and Marion from there.
And finally, there's Marion, who's who's probably the main character of the book, and she's the youngest sister.
So we meet her at 53.
She's been living on the islands for nearly 50 years.
And her big thing in the book is thinking about what it means to be a woman.
And they're about to flood the loch to try and get rid of this blue green algae outbreak, which means she's going to lose her home and be forced to move into modernity.
And she's just not sure she's going to cut it as a woman.
She's been online watching mommy blogs and look at it.
She does, and finding out what a Kardashian is and trying to join book groups.
It's very funny, I have to say.
There's a lot of humor in it.
my favourite scene in the book is when Marion goes to the mainland to buy a bra in Dunn's and I've had so many women be like that is absolutely spot on like there's a line where she says I've got this cardigan in black beige and brown already so I'd get the wear out of any of you one
So I really, really, there's a lot of me and Marianne, I'll just say that.
The second of the big themes in the book is trauma and particularly trauma related to the North and how we've dealt with it.
And it's a book and an imagined space of two halves.
So there's one side of the islands, the archipelago is inhabited by humans.
The other side, as you mentioned, is the far side.
