He holds out his hand to shake.
He has an eye tattooed on his right palm.
It's a quick seven hours from Story, Wyoming to Mitchell, South Dakota, skirting the Black Hills National Forest and through Sturgis, where they like motorcycles more than they like not getting COVID.
That's kind of the only thing I know about Sturgis.
Mitchell is a town about which little interesting can be said, which is not a knock on it.
Interesting is rarely conducive to peaceful living.
The main street has a coffee shop and an antique small and a massive bar and grill called the Back Forty that looks out of business.
And then there it is.
The world's only corn palace, the big sign says.
Almost certainly accurate.
The exterior is decorated with actual ears of corn.
The theme, another sign tells me, is 250 years of America.
And so there is a Declaration of Independence and a Liberty Bell, all made of corn.
Around the corner is a Rosie the Riveter.
And listen, they did the best they could making her face out of corn, but she did come out a little Picasso, if I'm honest.
I went inside and am disappointed that it is merely a basketball court.
I want a little more grandeur out of my corn palaces.
The former Praxis member who was supposed to meet me here hasn't shown.
Maybe they thought that the world's only corn palace was self-explanatory.
