I circle the building, following the corn art as it gets darker, more luridly violent, until I am back at the front of the building.
And now, the mural is me, fighting a thistle man in a hidden town in Victorville.
I am depicted at heroic scale, a couple stories high.
The other mural on the front of the palace is of a young woman, a girl almost, a teenager, or only a little past it.
She is gesturing toward a door, also made of corn.
But again, the mural somehow, despite its kitschy medium, seems impossibly real.
I approach, and as I do, the door in the mural swings open.
I feel the same dry, cool air as I felt from the window to nowhere.
I stepped through.
Now here is the Corn Palace as I had envisioned it.
A grandiose room, all decorated in corn and with corn-shaped chandeliers and statuary.
I hear the sound of a grand party from somewhere else in the palace, howling laughter, chattering gossip, soft music, but I can see no sign of life.
I walk past a painting of two people who look like nobility, except the painter has depicted them turning into cobs of corn halfway through the transformation.
