Then Nye walked briskly away down the river, and I'm headed back to the RV on the highway to Florida.
The prairie states get a lot of shit for being flat, but no one talks about the flatness of Florida.
Driving in Florida is nothing but long, flat roads.
Same as Nebraska.
But instead of cornfields, there are lakes and busted pickup trucks pulled over for who knows what errands.
Do you know the height of the tallest mountain in Florida?

So I'll tell you.
It's 345 feet tall.
345 is the highest you can get by natural means in God's swamp.
Where I'm driving now isn't a swamp, though.
It's actually kind of arid.
I pass an orange farm, rows of fruit-laden trees.
I open the window so the smell of oranges passes through the RV.
Oranges may smell even better than they taste, especially baking in the sun, still attached to the living tree.
I pass through Lakeland, Florida, and then out to the other side, and it becomes apparent where the name comes from.
There must be hundreds of lakes out here, some merely ponds with grand ideas about themselves, others big enough for party boats and the like.
A mix of older ramshackle houses from the first wave of people coming to enjoy these lakes, and then new suburban subdivisions with names like the Estates of Lake Juliana.
Houses fronted with at least four different building materials.
