A chaos of brick and wood and stone with no thought to aesthetics.
I assume the people that live in the older houses staff all the supermarkets and boat rental places for the people that live in the newer houses.
Right now, I'm in a town called Cottonwood.
Nice little place.
The kind of main street that happens when someone updates an old town, sticks in a third-wave coffee shop in a restaurant that is not a diner but serves diner-inspired food.
Not a town where tourists would go.
Not worth driving far to look at.
But the kind of town that serves as a center for the rural area around.
Do you want to go for breakfast in town?
kind of place.
I've seen many, from the Catskills to the Central Valley.
They all have basically the same stuff.
What unifies us as a country is a desire, whether expressed or sublimated, for a walkable main street with some nice stuff on it.
Somewhere that is the opposite of a parking lot sprawl.
We built entire theme parks around the idea.
As I drive down Main Street, I turn my head, because I think I see a mural.
And local murals can be interesting.
Commemorating historical events no one more than 10 miles from the town center has heard about.
And as I do, there is a horrible shift.
The sky is a little darker.
