I'm afraid to allow the shift to happen while I'm still in the bookstore.

So I step outside and then turn my head until the buildings turn to vacant heaps.

I see the old man down the street, still with his plastic bag, and I jog after him.

Excuse me, sir, I call, and he turns to look at me curiously.

I was just wondering about this place.

Ain't a place, the old man mutters.

His voice sounds so different, robbed of any spirit.

Ain't nothing at all.

And then the briefest flash of the energy I had seen in the bookstore passes behind his eyes.

But it was once.

Maybe it can be again.

He smiled sadly.

I won't live to see it, but it'd be nice if it were so.

He turns and I let him go.

And then I let my vision wander until he disappears into his sadder past.

replaced by the hopeful present.

This is exactly the kind of weird little pocket in America that the woman I'm searching for would be drawn to.

So I stick around for a couple days, keeping an eye out in both the past and the present.

It's kind of fun, although a little creepy, to snap back and forth.
