So Adrian Mayer wrote a really good book about this called The First Fossil Hunters.
And it's this idea that we found dinosaurs
Where dragon myth seems to be the most prolific are also places that are reasonably high kind of earthquake zones, a lot of seismic activity, and therefore suggesting that a lot of fossils were therefore unearthed as the ground was moving.
And then that meant that they found these giant fossils and were like, what?
What's that got to be?
And they imagined a dragon.
And let's not lie, a dragon looks like a dinosaur.
They're not far away from each other.
They're reptilian-style things, right?
So that's plausible.
That's really plausible.
And then the other sort of school of thought is that actually the reason we have them all over the world and that people believed in them is because we have an inherent psychological fear of the snake.
And all dragon stories really come from snakes, right?
And that's the first thing to kind of say about it.
People are like, what?
But it really is.
The first dragons look more snake-like than anything else.
And it's like, you know, we have this inherent phobia of...
of certain creatures, right?
We don't have that many snakes in the UK, but I certainly know to keep away from it, right?
