And the number has actually been stable for Australia for the last five years.

So I think that's the subsidies kicking in and taking care of a degree of that expense.

So it means that I think the system is working.

And relative to the US, which is on the other side of it, there's not a lot of socialized child care.

And so Americans pay the most out of health care, about $1,200 a month in US dollars.

People are paying for childcare privately.

And in New Zealand, what we're seeing is there are subsidies, but the system is quite different to Australia's.

It's targeted at children from ages three to five.

And I think it's a set number of hours, about 20 hours of early childhood education a week.

and then there's a top-up.

So the parents have to make a call about whether or not to work and pay for it or sometimes it actually makes more sense to not work and stay home to take care of your kids, particularly if you've got a child that doesn't qualify for a subsidy.

So what we're seeing is

What's interesting is that the spending on childcare in New Zealand is going up.

It's gone up by 1.6 times over the last five years relative to Australia's reasonably flat spending.

And what this indicates to us is that more people, it's not that the cost of childcare is going up.

Sure it is, but it's outpacing the cost.

And what it says to us is that more people are putting more hours into childcare.

So more people are going back to work and they're paying more for childcare in New Zealand.
