Yeah, I discovered Chandler by accident in 2007.

I was cast in a US television network pilot that never got picked up.

But before I shot it, I thought maybe I should do my homework.

So and it was it was, you know, Philip Marlowe.

It was a contemporary take on the on the detective story.

series.

So I read The Long Goodbye and then I proceeded to read everything that Chandler wrote because I just, I fell in love with him.

At that point, I was bi-coastal living in New York and LA and I didn't really get LA.

I would go there for work, but I never really understood the city.

I think I saw a lot of the cliches at first, you know, the traffic, the billboards, the really kind of superficial glamour of the place, if you like.

And then Chandler showed me a city where

I saw faded elegance and impossible dreams at a place full of heartbreak, lonely souls, you know, people still hoping that tomorrow would be, you know, it'll be, their lives were going to change.

I think there is an element to that.

A lot of people there are transplants from other places and they've come there for a reason.

And it doesn't work out for everybody, you know.

There's a lot of little dogs there doing a lot of compensation for people who have broken dreams.

But, you know, Chandler elevates all this and he transformed it into poetry.

All his prose, I think, is funny, lyrical, it's cynical and somehow sad at the same time, which is a perfect explanation for the city itself.

But they're elevated into literature, in my opinion anyway.

Anyway, the television pilot disappeared without a trace, but it gave me Raymond Chandler and Raymond Chandler gave me L.A.
