But the real event that you've got to grapple with is by the time we came in and crushed over Europe, so you've got General Patton steams into Europe, the Russians steam in, and we kind of meet somewhere around Berlin.
That's 1945.
In 1944, August of 1944, half a year earlier, there was a meeting at the Maison Rouge Hotel in Strasbourg where all of the leading German industrialists,
Many of whom, by the way, had lots of friends in America.
They were friends with the Rockefellers, with the Dulleses.
They had all of these industrial connections from before the war and even during the war.
They met.
in Strasbourg and said, it's time to do a mass evacuation.
And it sounds mythical.
When you read about it, it sounds sort of like, could this really have happened?
But Peter Lavender dug up really important documentation from the State Department that shows that it did happen.
This pre-evacuation before we got into mainland Europe.
I think it was the State Department.
It might have been the Treasury Department.
What they found, they were doing a Senate hearing on the elimination of German resources for war.
And what they identified was that already by July of 1945, this is two months after the end of World War II, they had identified 750 subsidiaries had been set up in neutral countries by German industry.
750 subsidiaries.
There was also hundreds of tons of gold missing by the time the final search was complete.
It turns out 500 tons of gold were transferred from the Reichsbank down to Brazil.
That's just one transaction.
