The moment they decrypted it, they found that the Soviets had been spying on the Americans already for years and knew all of their secrets.
So the Cold War paranoia was starting during World War II.
After World War II, it's discovered that people in unbelievably senior roles across the United States government are Soviet spies.
And so even Truman is like, he's looking left, he's looking right.
It's like, this guy I trusted for all these years was a spy for the Soviets.
This person in this department who had access to pretty much everything.
So I think there was this sense that the floor was falling out from underneath them.
And then the UFO thing happens.
And I think there's definitely an awareness that some of it is non-human.
And there's also an awareness that some of this is probably human technology.
The intensity of what was going on there was wild, I think.
So you've got to put yourself in their shoes.
What do you do in that situation?
Your air defenses are being breached.
Your enemy has breached every component of your environment.
You don't know whether the things that are being flown might be theirs.
You're not sure how much of it is yours, how much of it is something else.
So saying anything, anything at all would be so destabilizing and unhelpful given that you don't even know the basic facts and you're probably moments away from being completely compromised as a power.
So I do understand the trajectory in the late 40s into the 50s towards total lockdown and secrecy.
That's one thing.
