I remember one thing I really hated was yang rau pao mo, which is basically a lamb soup with sliced boiled lamb.
And the special thing about it is you would take a piece of bread, like a hard flatbread,
In China, you would break it up yourself with your hands.
You throw it into the bowl, and in the shop or if you're at home, you would boil the bread in the soup, making it sort of like a puffy type of bread soup almost.
It's not really a soup anymore.
It's kind of like a whole heavy meal from that.
And I really hated that dish as a kid because it was so heavy.
And then I just remember we had lunch hour.
We'd go home during lunch in elementary school back then.
I would go home and my grandfather would have a bowl of that ready for me.
And I was like, this is a lot of food.
I can't eat this.
And I would just be watching like the Lion King or something and then eating it.
And it would just get cold and the oil would get hardened and it would stick to the top of my mouth.
It was just disgusting.
So in China, I didn't appreciate it.
But once I left that environment going into small town USA, I found out, wow, there's no lamb back then.
I couldn't even find it in the supermarket.
And all the condiments I'm used to, all the spices are not around.
So I started missing those things I ran away from, you know?
