So like food has changed its identity in my head over the years.
What year did you move to America?
1997, 98, around those.
And where was the first place your family went to when you got there?
Yeah, so I moved into a small town in the Midwest.
I think that was also very important because if I ended up in New York, I think it would have been different.
My family is actually very small.
Most of my family is still in China.
And I think in the first couple of years of being in the U.S., there was some points where I was like, I'm not learning English fast enough.
I'm always in this ESL type of situation.
Even though the school is so small, they didn't really have an ESL program, but...
I was always kind of segregated, like, oh, yeah, he doesn't speak English yet, so let's not have him take the regular tests.
The kids usually take, like, spelling tests and things like that.
So it just felt like this is not somewhere I could be long-term.
And that homesickness, along with everything else, whether it's food every day or whether it's—sorry to jump around, but, like, food-wise, I used to hate—
the smell of pizza.
I used to hate the smell of pickles, like the dill flavor.
But I love those now.
Very unfamiliar.
We didn't use dill.
