It's hard for you to treat other people like human beings.
when you think that they're morally evil.
But what Jacqueline's doing is almost textbook what social psychologists have found is actually really important to get past these issues, which is that you need to realize that you can reach out to people and they're not the evil, sinister beings that you believe.
Some of them might be, but often our mental images and stereotypes are way worse than reality for the entire group, and we shouldn't apply them to everybody in the group.
The other thing that you need to understand is that if you approach it from a position of curiosity and you listen and reach out to other people to hear their perspectives, that turns out to be the single thing that is most powerful at putting other people at ease.
Because in these types of intergroup conflicts, people, when they're interacting with someone from the other group, expect to be criticized or manipulated.
And so they immediately move to the defensive and shut down.
But if you approach it from a perspective of curiosity and listening, it turns out you actually are more persuasive.
They actually appreciate the conversation more.
You actually start to shatter their stereotypes as well as your own.
And that becomes the foundation for having a real relationship that's built on mutual empathy and respect.
And so I can't stress enough how the world would be a better place if we had many more people like Jacqueline.
Yeah, a topic that really has fascinated me for the last half decade or so is intellectual humility.
And what this means is essentially openness to different people, to different experiences without getting threatened or defensive if you disagree or they challenge you.
And this is often considered a virtue.
It's an intellectual virtue that any of us can cultivate.
Now, most of the research on this has been at the individual level, that some individuals are more intellectually humble.
And it turns out the people who are, are less polarized, more willing to listen to people who are different than them, more willing to accept criticism of their own perspectives and accept kind of well-rounded views of things.
So it turns out to be a real superpower, but it also operates at the group level.
So you can be part of a group and have an openness to dissent and criticism in the group.
