You start to internalize those.

So we should be very thoughtful about the groups we join because they're going to lead us to be our best selves or worst selves.

And if you, you know, try to join the groups that are going to help you attain the type of identity that you want to have and achieve the goals you want, you're going to be a lot happier and more successful in life.

Now, what she's talking about is the case that happens to all of us at some point is that you're going to get put into groups.

And for many of us, those groups are our age, our gender, our ethnicity, where we're born, our family lineage, because we cannot control any of those.

And people stereotype us on the basis of those things.

And they often do it within 100 to 200 milliseconds of seeing somebody.

Wow.

This is what the neuroscience shows.

You show somebody something, within a few hundred milliseconds, they're often encoding their race, their gender, their age.

And so we can't avoid that.

And if people treat us differently on that basis...

It's a challenge to escape it.

And so this is why I strongly encourage us to like talk to people and be open and listen to who they are and what identities they actually care about.

I do this exercise in groups sometimes when I'm giving talks.

I ask people to list the 10 most important identities to them.

It's a great actual conversation starter at cocktail parties or work retreats because you learn a ton about a person by what identities actually matter to them.

For me, that may be a father, an author, a professor, a New Yorker now, a hockey fan.

But you start to learn about what I really value and the things that I don't actually care about that aren't central to me.
