No one believed him, that he didn't kill it himself, but his video retracting the slick new body of the decapitated snake made headlines.
The way it scintillated from the effort of his hands, pink-socking its dying body along the rocky outcropping to free the dry deprise.
And then that last minute or so of it whipping around, its bleeding stump neck striking at him blindly, flailing against and leaving streaks of red along his cargo pants, and the reaction his body had to the dead pressure there.
And what he did next, as he took out his capsaicin-blistered, erect pink worm from his pants.
The news called it a modern-day Ouroboros.
We called it his bunco cannibal holocaust.
That's when the munches started.
Those of us within a reasonable distance meeting up.
After he was banned from Reddit for life and he wiped his social media presence because someone doxed him, sent death threats, he was belligerent for those who wanted to see.
And then someone kidnapped his cat, Franch.
He moved two states away when that happened.
And then someone peeled French and shoved it into his parents' mailbox along with a DVD recording of the process, showing how to cut the fur just right to skin the animal with one good pull.
French had been gassed before the process started.
Then the cat woke up.
Everyone was horrified.
I still see the shaking, the yowling, the way it collapsed when I closed my eyes.
Wasn't one of ours.
but you never saw the person's face in the video.
And the basement, or wherever they were, was deep, empty, and echoey, making it tricky to hear what their voice sounded like.
And they kept huffing balloons filled with xenon.
