But when Jesus gives Peter a mission, it's not a mission of comfort or control or certainty.
It is, in fact, the opposite of those things.
Let's go back into the conversation with the words of Jesus in verses 18 through 19.
Jesus says this, Truly, truly I say to you, When you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.
This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.
And after saying this, he said to him, Follow me.
Now church history tells us that Peter would indeed die in a way that glorified God.
He was eventually crucified upside down because he wouldn't stop talking about his King Jesus.
This man who had hit the dead end of his own pride, of his ego, of his sin, of his denials, he is now being ushered into the living way of Jesus, into a totally new life that is all about the glory of God, within the story of God, even in suffering, even in unproductive.
unpredictability, even in the lack of control.
He's living in a new and living way.
That is the living way that all of us are invited to follow when we hit the dead end.
It's interesting at the end of verse nineteen, Jesus says to Peter, Follow me.
Now here's the thing, Peter has been following Jesus since leaving his boat by the Sea of Galilee.
But after meeting Jesus at the dead end.
He's going to follow Jesus differently now.
His restoration by Jesus fuels deeper participation in the mission of Jesus and
Jesus doubles down on his invitation through his final recorded words in John's gospel account.
Here's verse twenty-two.
At the very end of verse twenty-two, Jesus says, You follow me.
