And we know that because of the other truth that Jesus shares after these teachings that tether love with obedience.
Notice what Jesus says in verses 16 through 17.
And I will ask the Father, in the world.
And he will give you another helper to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him.
You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Now Jesus goes on to declare the same truth statement in verse twenty-six.
He says, But the helper, the Holy Spirit,
Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
So Jesus here in chapter fourteen, he's not just asking for something from his friends, he's sharing something that will be given to them and
Or more accurately, someone who will be given to them from the Father in His name, and this someone is the helper, the advocate, the counselor, the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit in the Bible is not an impersonal force or a vague spiritual possibility.
He is a promised person.
Now, what do we learn about the Holy Spirit here?
Well, we learn that he will be with Jesus' friends forever.
He is the spirit of truth who dwells with the followers of Jesus as individual people, but also in a special way as a community of faith.
He teaches us and helps stir a remembrance of what Jesus taught across the
Bible, wherever the Holy Spirit is, life is there.
Freedom is there.
Flourishing is there because the Holy Spirit moves and actively applies the finished work of Jesus to our life together.
Because of him, we are able to obey and have new life, new freedom, new flourishing as we receive Jesus' love and display it to the world.
