They are commandments of blessing.
Jesus' commandments are the way to freedom and flourishing.
They help us live with the grain of the universe that He spoke into existence.
So these are commandments of blessing.
The other key thing to remember is that obedience doesn't earn God's love.
It's a fruit of our love for God that's rooted in his love for us.
It's a lot like the dynamic we see on the wall of love.
If you've been loved by someone and you love them as well, well then you want to display it.
You want that person to see it, and you also want the world to see it.
That's the kind of love, the kind of obedience that's at play here.
But Jesus is talking about the kind of commitment that can't be contained by a canvas and has to spread into the entire cosmos.
It's not just displayed through words, but through behavior, through lived experience, through action and habits, relationships and character, all of those things working together to reflect the very heart of God Himself.
Now, Jesus' connection between love and a changed life is so emphatic that he repeats it in verse 21.
He says, Whoever has my
Commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me, and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.
And just in case we didn't get the message yet, one verse later, in verse 23, Jesus reiterates the same theme.
If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
All right, so this connection between love and obedience is a really big deal to Jesus.
But if we're not careful, we might think that in order to love Jesus, we just have to double down on self-discipline to obey him more consistently.
And more comprehensively in more areas of our lives, but the message here is not one of self-help or self-optimization through a disciplined spiritual life.
