All right, now our passage today begins with a summary of the belief problem that plagued many of the people who encountered Jesus in his ministry.
Let's pick things up in John 12, verse 37.
We read this,
Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him.
Now this summary might surprise many of us.
It's not uncommon for people today to proclaim that if they could just see a sign or have a more visible representation of Jesus, then they would believe in him.
But notice that even in Jesus' day, people not only saw him, they saw the signs performed by him.
Signs of his authority, signs of his love, signs of his advancing kingdom.
and they still didn't believe in him.
John then notes that this isn't a new phenomenon.
He cites Isaiah 53 verse 1 and the pervasive ancient belief problem that hovers over the human heart.
How is it possible for so many people across the expanse of history to see the presence, to experience the power of God, and still remain in unbelief?
The following section in John 12 gives us a window into why this battle of belief is so complex.
We read this in verse 39.
Therefore, they could not believe.
For again, Isaiah said, now John's going to cite a portion of Isaiah chapter 6.
He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn and I would heal them.
All right, there's so much we could unpack here, but here's an essential truth to take away from the darkness of disbelief.
The problem of unbelief is so persistent because apart from God's sovereign grace, people cannot believe.
Unless the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of someone's heart to see Jesus and treasure Him and trust Him, then their eyes will remain blind.
