The greatest threat to our belief isn't a lack of strength.

It's the spiritual death of our hearts.

Now the challenge of unbelief is even more complicated because our hardened hearts desire things more than God himself.

Notice how this is displayed in verses 42 through 43.

Nevertheless, many, even of the authorities, believed in him.

But for fear of the Pharisees, they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue.

For they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Now it would be easy to skim over this, but we need to pay really close attention to it.

Some of the religious authorities were believing in Jesus, yet they didn't confess it in public.

They had a belief to start the journey of following Jesus, but they didn't embody the kind of belief that allowed them to keep going.

Why?

Well, John says they love the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

Now, this is a huge barrier of belief for so many of us today.

We're able to believe that God exists, that Jesus died for our sins and rose again.

We believe that the Spirit is at work.

And yet, we still love the glory that comes from other people more than the glory that comes from God.

We love the glory that comes from impressing our friends or our co-workers.

We love the glory that comes from protecting a reputation or a status in our community.

For many of us, the greatest barrier between us and a deepening faith in Jesus is our dependence on the approval of others.
