As long as we love the glory that comes from people more than the glory that comes from the truly glorious Creator King,

then our ability to believe in Jesus and believe Him will be hindered.

That darkness of disbelief still lingers in our hearts.

John 12 is not holding back on the nature of our belief problem here.

We don't believe like we should because we desire glory apart from God and because at a root level, we need God's sovereign grace to encounter us, to awaken us, and free us.

And the wonderful news is that the end of our passage focuses on that sovereign grace that arrives in the person of Jesus.

Now, I seriously love how this passage continues.

Right after John's exposition on the great barriers to our belief, we read that Jesus cries out.

He cries out.

Here are verses 44-46.

And Jesus cried out and said, whoever believes in me, believes not in me, but in him who sent me.

And whoever sees me, sees him who sent me.

I have come into the world as light so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.

When Jesus cries out, his voice batters into the belief barriers we face and he sends them tumbling to the ground.

Let's reflect on the great hope we have in Jesus here.

Jesus doubles down on the good news he proclaimed earlier in John 8 verse 12 when he said, I am the light of the world.

Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

Jesus returns to that same truth here in John chapter 12 to encourage those who are in the deep depths of the darkness of disbelief.

Let's appreciate Jesus' point here by observing what he doesn't say.

He doesn't say, you need to learn more or do more or be more in order to believe in me.
