The true story that power to overcome can arise from the most obscure places.
and that the story's end is marked by triumph instead of terror.
All of that comes from that one branch of the survivor tree.
Just one branch can make all the difference.
Our passage today in Matthew's Gospel account originates from a time of great terror and tragedy and uncertainty.
Herod has murdered all the male children of two years and under in Bethlehem.
There is weeping.
There is lamentation.
It seems like Herod's reign of terror is just another example of a world broken by sin and evil and suffering.
But in our text today, the power to overcome this terror will emerge from a seemingly obscure location.
Like a single branch rising from the rubble, we'll see the triumphant flourishing that covers even our most terrible fragmentation.
And as we approach God's word together, let's pause as we always do and ask for his grace to move through our time.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of life and breath and for your word.
We bring before you every part of our experiences here and now, our joys and our sorrows, our anxiety, our excitement, our calendars and our contingencies.
Would you meet us in this space?
We also pray in a special way for those who bear the pain of September 11th today, for those who have lost loved ones, and for those who still bear the weight of loss from that awful day.
Jesus, give them your peace, give them your comfort, and help all of us abide in you as we engage with your truth.
Holy Spirit, we ask you to move in and through this time in Matthew's gospel account.
And as we read your living word, may it read us and restore us to life with you.
