Our passage today begins with the death of the terrorizing tyrant Herod.

And as our hearts sort through the rubble of his reign, we see a sign of life emerging from an unlikely place.

Let's pick up Matthew's account in verse 19.

But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead.

And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.

But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there.

And being warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee.

And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

Now, Matthew makes this interesting comment about Jesus's hometown in Nazareth, but it's not just a detail about the providential protection over Jesus.

It's also about a promise that is being fulfilled.

Matthew makes this really intriguing comment in verse 23.

Let's read it again.

And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled.

that he would be called a Nazarene.

This mention of the prophets is especially interesting because there is not a particular passage in the Old Testament that says anything about the town of Nazareth, not a single one.

So what exactly does Matthew mean in connecting the fulfillment of the prophets with Nazareth and the boyhood hometown of Jesus?

Well, we get a hint at what Matthew means when we recognize that this doesn't reference one specific prophet.

In fact, this is the only time where Matthew references the prophets, plural, being fulfilled.

The point is that Matthew is not trying to chase down one specific quotation from the Old Testament, but is displaying a special quality that is foretold in many different parts of the Old Testament.

There's something about the collective truth of the prophets that is fulfilled in Jesus having Nazareth as his hometown.
