Basically, that's what it is.
It's keeping the books.
That book's being a checkbook for you as a business owner, just like it would for your personal records.
Somebody that can keep a checkbook and do it well, somebody who can keep the accounts reconciled, the bank accounts reconciled, so that they always know what's outstanding, what's cleared, what hasn't cleared, and they can help you if you need to make payments like wires
ACHs and those kinds of things.
They know how to navigate that with the banks so that you can, because not everybody's going to want to check.
Some people are going to want something different.
They can help you navigate everything related to your records and the bank relationship.
If they can do that, then you're in good shape.
So then where do we go from there?
What's the next step and what do they do?
The next step up from there would be someone who I'll just refer to as like a staff accountant.
There's somebody who's got a little bit, maybe formal training in accounting or finance, somebody who can take those books and records and translate them into a set of financial statements.
Something that's gonna help you as a leader see how much money's coming in, where's it coming in from, how much am I still owed by the people who bought some stuff from me and I sold it to them on terms or whatever.
so that you don't have to go figure it out all on your own they can help you think through those things and navigate the month end or every quarter or annually depending on what you need and that's that's the difference between a bookkeeper just kind of keeping the books bank reconciliations those minor things or more they don't have to have an accounting jury or anything like that
Staff accountant is going to be somebody who's got formal training, knows the business, knows how to do things and do it well inside of an accounting box, and give you information that helps you run the business.
Where do we go next?
After the staff accountant, what's the next hire?
For me, it would be you may have a staff accountant, maybe two or whatever, and then whenever you get up probably around five million of revenue, something like that, you would look to hire a CFO.
That is somebody that's going to help you think about, where do I place my next investment?
