The article details an alleged multi-year scheme in which a government contractor funneled money to Susan Collins' political campaigns and super PACs, as well as other candidates, in exchange for those offices funneling lucrative government contracts back to the contractor.

Now, just to underscore how gigantic the allegations in this story are, it is illegal for government contractors to donate to political candidates.

It is illegal for them to disguise their donations to avoid detection.

And it is super duper illegal for donations to be made in exchange for official acts from a senator.

ProPublica's reporting suggests that not only did all of that happen, but Collins and her office knew it was happening and encouraged it, maybe even solicited it.

Now, Collins and her office, of course, deny all of that.

So what do we actually know here, which is very important with any story, and ProPublica did an excellent job of laying this out.

Here's what we know.

The government contractor at the center of this story was a Hawaiian defense contractor called Novatec.

The company's CEO, who eventually pleaded guilty to campaign finance crimes, told the FBI that the company's work for the government was of no real value, which should be a big red flag, and it is.

Now, as ProPublica put it, the company's bread and butter was research and development that went nowhere.

So just to give you an example, at one point, Novatec used a multi-million dollar Navy contract to build what the Guinness Book of World Records would declare was the world's largest 3D printed boat.
