So now that we have these headlines that are full of joy and national pride and, you know, finally I feel like that chapter in Irish swimming has closed with the guilty verdict against Gibney.

So in July a jury found him guilty, he's 78 now by the way, of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape on dates between 1971 and 1981 at various locations and two of those were swimming pools.

And he had initially been charged with 79 counts, but he pleaded guilty at the outset of the trial to five counts of indecent assault and 38 charges were thrown out against him.

Now, he's going to be sentenced in October, but he's not going to appeal.

We know that.

So, yeah, so I just think like part of me, though, does wonder what do the victims of George Gibney and Derry O'Rourke and others feel now when they look at the likes of Ellen and Mona and Daniel Whiffen and all, you know, all of those who are achieving so much in swimming?

And is there a little part of them that goes, you know, that was all taken from me, along with everything else, much more significant things that were taken from them, their innocence and their childhood, but also their chance to find out what kind of athlete they were and what they might have been capable of in different circumstances.

Actually, one of the victims said that last month in their victim impact statement.

She said she had needed psychological intervention from the age of nine.

She had had nightmares.

She'd isolated herself.

She had self-harmed due to his actions.
