In fact, serious and depressing, but perhaps not terribly shocking story that emerged this week from the Workplace Relations Commission.

This is about a woman who is living in rented accommodation since 2018 with her children and then for personal reasons had to flee for her safety to a women's refuge in April of 2025.

She was gone out of her home for under three weeks, I think for around two weeks, and got in touch with the property management company to say that she was temporarily in a women's refuge, but she would be returning to the property.

And she left behind her belongings and her children's belongings.

And you can probably imagine the circumstances under which she had to go.

People leave without their shoes, without their clothes.

Exactly.

And for legal reasons, we can't get into why she left, but you can imagine, you can join the dots.

So the woman's name is Sana Khadi and she's

She was in touch all throughout her time in the women's refuge with the property management company.

But when she returned home after just the two or three weeks, she found that her housing assistance payment or HAP payment, which people will be familiar with, is a payment from the state that allows you to work and it helps you to pay your rent.

And very hard to find housing even with a HAP payment and impossible to afford housing if you don't have it and you're on a low income.

But she found that her HAP payment had been cancelled by the local authority.

And that was bad enough.

And it is appallingly bad.
