But then the management company, a man called Morgan Kearns of Kearns Property Consultants, refused to sign the new application over months and months, leaving her in a position where she was unable to meet her rent.
So she fell into rent arrears and then that stopped her from getting the half payment because in order to qualify for half, your rent has to be up to date.
So she was caught between a rock and a hard place.
And she's written an op-ed for us, which is in the paper today about her experience and the impact that it had on her.
And it's all detailed in the WRC's ruling, which was published yesterday and which did rule absolutely in her favour and awarded her almost the maximum.
amount.
And the respondent was Morgan Cairns from the Cairns Property Company.
He told the WRC that she had, listen to this now, vacated the property and cancelled her own half payment, which meant that she was, when she returned, she was in breach of her rental contract.
And when she came back, it was an unauthorised occupancy of her own house where she'd left her belongings.
Yeah, yeah.
So she was in correspondence from April throughout May, right throughout last summer, and only towards the end of last year she got IRAC involved.
And I think what's very interesting about this, and it's definitely worth saying, is none of this would have come to light and it could happen to other women and other families had she not had some legal background and had she not understood that this was in violation of her rights.
So she got in touch with IRAC and they agreed to represent her and got on to the landlord.
But it still ended up going to the WRC and the WRC officer ruled totally in her favour.
And I think, you know, one of the things that the WRC found was that it was quite clear that the property management company had basically just had enough and had had enough of dealing with her.
And in fact, Morgan Cairns had written to her in May and had said that these HAP inspections are a big inconvenience to the landlord and to ourselves as the tenant is responsible for the upkeep of the house.
In the last two years, our HAP tenancies have been reduced by 50% because of landlords selling their investments.
And this landlord is now considering selling the property because of the above problems.
The above problems being things that he was alluding to, that he was claiming that she had not done or done or whatever.
But essentially, he was saying it's too much hassle.
