Cotter's farm in the eighteen sixties.

And Mr.

Cotter was a real person.

He uh protested against the government at the time that were forcing him and the neighboring farmers to strip the land of trees and bush.

Um especially these three

blue gums that were on his ridge, he refused to cut them down and it was basically a you kick the land and strip the trees or you lose it situation.

So he walked off the land um and then about ten years later the government was paying everybody to replant the trees on the same land.

Um, Ginny Churchill, the woman that I wrote it with, told me that story and I thought, that sounds better than any any part of my love life, so let's write a song about.
