Even if there's no like overt sexism, you could argue even that that has, um, in like modern day workplaces that has reduced to more like overt ways in which women are discriminated against.

Uh, but we do see that a lot of workplaces still sort of like value or reward is traditional masculinity.

So being tough.

showing a sort of win-at-all-cost kind of attitude.

And the interesting thing is that that is more like, this is just what you have to do in order to get ahead and in order to gain respect.

So the link more with inequality is much more subtle than when it's more overt.

So in previous work,

We see that women, when they experience discrimination in the workplace, they sometimes downplay their gender identity as a way of coping.

What we saw here was that that is not necessarily even necessary.

It could even be by the kind of things that are rewarded in the workplace, we sometimes see the same thing happening.

Basically all of that.

So we've looked at this in several ways.

So we asked employees what their workplace is like.

basically measure what the workplace is like, and then ask them how they feel and act in the workplace.

So that is also more like how do you feel dissatisfied about being a woman in that setting?

Do you feel like you have to change the way you kind of present yourself, downplaying your femininity, being like one of the boys?

We also did this more like try to get more behavioral measures that are not as common in this kind of literature.

yeah so in one of the study or several studies we asked people to imagine what it's like to work in a workplace with a certain workplace culture so if in some more stronger masculinity contest cultures and then we told them like okay imagine now you're going to actually start working there it's a fully remote work environment um so you interact with each other basically exclusively in like a virtual work environment work environment with like avatars so they saw this image of

a virtual office, including avatars of their coworkers.

And they also had to choose an avatar that basically was their face when they would interact with others.
