When Peter encountered the risen Christ, he finally got it.
John alludes often that the disciples who followed Jesus didn't fully understand until after his resurrection.
In just a few chapters before his death, Jesus will teach his disciples that the way to bear fruit, the way to love like Jesus is to abide in Jesus.
Like a branch is rooted in the vine, getting its strength and life from the vine, we, rooted in Jesus, are empowered to live like him.
We are called to follow Jesus so closely that it's as if we were attached to him, connected to him, rooted in him.
We depend so deeply, we gaze on him so fully, we seek him so continually that we are constantly abiding in his love for us.
Jesus says, this is to my Father's glory that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
As the Father has loved me, so I loved you.
Now remain in my love.
we bear fruit, we show ourselves disciples by our love.
And we are able to love precisely because we have been loved by Jesus and continue to rest in His love.
Now, we cannot do this perfectly, but Jesus is very clear.
The world will know my followers by their love,
The kind of love that marks you and me as true followers of Jesus is the love that we live out in this world.
It means a real, tangible, boots-on-the-ground kind of love.
But it doesn't come by trying to be more loving, by working harder to love, by coming up with more ideas of how to love other people.
No, it flows naturally out of us because we have become people transformed by the love of Jesus.
Read the Gospels, all of them, over and over, and you will find person after person transformed by their interactions with Jesus because of the love that He showed them, the way He saw them, cared for them, knew them.
When you experience and are rooted in that kind of deep love, it changes you.
