Then Jesus answered, "'Will you really lay down your life for me?

Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.'"

So Peter, he's confident.

He wants to follow Jesus anywhere that he's going.

He's a disciple.

It's his job to follow his rabbi.

He says he'd even follow Jesus to his death.

But Jesus knows the truth.

Even after all his time following him, Peter doesn't fully understand the point.

Peter thinks he may have to follow Jesus into battle against the Romans.

He may have to give up his life for the cause.

But Jesus knows that when Peter understands his true intentions, to die at the hand of the Romans, he will run, deny, disown.

He wants to follow Jesus, but when the path of Jesus turns to mercy and love for his enemies, not conquering them, Peter doesn't follow.

And maybe that's disheartening for us to hear.

Peter, a man who walked, talked, lived, and loved Jesus, can't even do the one thing Jesus calls him to.

How will we?

How can we live up to the monumental task of loving like Jesus?

Because the way that Jesus loved is by dying to himself, putting the needs of others before his own, and serving the Father above all else.

See, we have to remember, this is the same Peter that leads the early church, that becomes the rock on which the church is built.

This Peter who will deny Christ will also champion a church that was known for its love for all people.
