How will people know that we are disciples, followers of Jesus?
By our love.
Our love for one another.
To love one another as Jesus has loved us.
Jesus makes it plain and simple.
It is love that distinguishes the Christian from others.
If you truly are my disciples, if you truly follow me, then you will follow the well-worn path of love that I have woven through my life in ministry.
See, we often complicate things, but Jesus simplifies.
Love.
If you read the Gospels through the lens of love, you will understand the weight of what you are being called to.
You will see Jesus again and again loving every person he interacts with through healing, rebuke, guidance, humility, service, compassion, tender mercy, teaching.
Again and again, we see Jesus moved by his love for humanity, for all that he interacts with.
Now, it may seem like we're changing topics, but stick with me.
Directly following Jesus saying this really important command, the key to following him, Peter goes back to the other thing that Jesus said.
Feels kind of like he just skips right over this little tidbit about love, and he asks, Simon Peter asked him,
"'Lord, where are you going?'
Jesus replied, "'Where I am going you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.'
Peter asked, "'Lord, why can't I follow you now?
I will lay down my life for you.'
