He quotes from Deuteronomy eight three.
He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
So he looks back to a time when God fed the Israelites in the wilderness, he provided for them as long as they followed, trusted, and obeyed his commands.
Take enough mana for each day, and God will continue to provide each day.
It was a lesson in trust, in believing that God is in control, that He will provide for their needs, that what they really need is the Word of God, a relationship with God, His guidance, His laws, His ways.
A life full of God's word, even if it's hungry, dependent, humble, is far better than a life lived with a full belly and an empty spiritual life.
See, the Israelites did not always remember this, grumbling, complaining, groaning against the wilderness and their hunger, blaming God, mistrusting him, wishing for slavery over his presence.
But Jesus, he held firm.
He could have provided for himself in an instant, but he did not.
He did what the Israelites could not do.
He did what Adam could not do.
He resisted the urge to take and eat.
So the devil moves on.
This time he uses scripture in his temptation.
Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
If you are the Son of God, he said, throw yourself down.
For it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
Jesus answered him, It is also written, Do not put the Lord your God to the test.
Again, Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy, this time chapter six, verse sixteen.
He's referring to a time when the Israelites were falling into temptation.
