grumbling against the Lord at Massa for water, wishing for slavery again, commanding God to produce another miracle for them and give them water.

And in this story, God does give them water miraculously, but he rebukes them for putting him to the test.

See, the devil is asking Jesus to do the same.

He's misusing Scripture, telling Jesus to force God's hand to miraculously save him.

Because doesn't Scripture say that he will?

Wouldn't this be a great way to start your ministry with a public, miraculous act to prove you're the Son of God?

This temptation reminds us that all of Scripture is held in context together.

Taking verses to fit your agenda, to twist the words of God for your own purposes, it's dangerous.

But Jesus, he knows the word of God.

He knows the will of God.

And it isn't for Jesus to become famous, to miraculously prove who he was on day one, but to walk the slow and difficult road to the cross, the lowly road, to transform hearts for the kingdom, not to attract fans of the miraculous.

See, Jesus knows what it really means to be the Son of God, and he will not misuse scripture to fit an ulterior agenda.

So the devil tries one more time to thwart Jesus from his ultimate mission, to cause him to fail as the Israelites did.

Again the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

All this I will give you, he said, if you bow down and worship me.

Jesus said to him, Away from me, Satan, for it is written, worship the Lord your God and serve him only.

Here the devil tempts Jesus with the crown.

The power to be the king today.

All he has to do is bow down and worship the devil.

But Jesus knows that he is already going to be king, he was born king.
