But the road he will walk is the road of service to God.

Again, quoting from Deuteronomy six, verse thirteen, fear the Lord your God, serve him only, and take your oaths in his name.

Fear the Lord, serve him only.

To bypass the cross and gain the world, Jesus would have to worship and serve the devil.

And in doing so, he might technically gain the crown, the throne, but he would not break the curse of sin.

He would not obtain freedom for God's people.

He would break the command of God.

He would fall as Adam fell, as the Israelites fell, attempting to take what they believed was a rightful promise of God on their own.

But Jesus knows that to be the Son of God, to fulfill the covenants, to do what the Israelites before him could not do, he must resist the temptation to take control.

He must remain morally uncompromised, and in doing so, God would give him the throne.

But the road would not be easy.

Just as the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness it would lead him to a cross.

But it would be through that cross alone that He would secure victory over death, freedom for God's people, and provide justice for all evil.

The final verse tells us at this the devil left, and the angels ministered to his needs.

See, Jesus is victorious in this first cosmic clash.

Matthew is painting Jesus as the perfect Israelite, the one who did what those who came before him could not do, and that should bolster our faith.

See the overarching point of the story is to tell you and me that Jesus is king.

He does what we could not do for ourselves so that we can have a way to draw near the throne of God and be redeemed into who we were made to be.

The devil cannot overcome him.
