Well the West Bank and uh people who look at these things also include uh East Jerusalem in in all of that, in that classification.
Here's the stretch of land that essentially lies between what the Foreign Secretary called Green Line Israel, in other words, the boundaries it had after the nineteen forty-nine Armistice Agreement, uh at the end of its independence war, what the Palestinians call the catastrophe.
Um, and it's this piece of land which Israel has occupied since nineteen sixty-seven and which has been also the focus
since then of the move to settle Israeli Jews in that land and it has become also uh y in a sense the driving force behind those who believe that first of all a Palestinian state
alongside Israel is is the only way of g getting any kind of peace on one side.
And the other interpretation, which is that the interpretation of the current Israeli government and of Mr.
Netanyahu, is that as he has often put it, there will never be a Palestinian state.
So massive divergence there of views.
Uh first of all on violence, the the the evidence is overwhelming uh about the degree uh of violence used by Jewish settlers, uh not all of them, but bar of a powerful minority, probably, with the support of many others, uh including significant people in the cabinet of the Israeli government and also inside the ID.
And the security forces.
So that that's been going on.
There's a load of evidence about that.
This area called E1 is significant because it is the last piece of open land between East Jerusalem, which Palestinians want as a capital in a future state, and the rest of the West Bank.
And it's the, if you like, for supporters of
Of uh a long-standing plan, which has been going on for decades, uh in Israel, to to ring East Jerusalem with Jewish habitation, with and some of which is on occupied lands, therefore a settlement, um, that uh E1 is the last bit that is open, which is not built upon.
And so the feeling is that.
cutting off a possible Palestinian state from the rest of where they would like the Palestinian state to be.
And Britain of course has recognised all of that.
