Appearances
They're amazing.
They're very, very assertive.
They love the idea or the prospect of independence.
But the other thing that's going on, which is very important, is there's also a strand of tradition.
So I can come, instead of wanting to, say, be portrayed getting on an aeroplane,
I can come in my traditional dress with my family, all in traditional dress, and I can reassert what it is that the Europeans were vaguely uncomfortable with or condescended to.
So there are as many, not quite as many, but there are many, many people who pose in their traditional ethnic costumes or their traditional ceremonial costumes.
And this also is being celebrated.
So it's a sort of,
It's a double effect, but it's extremely joyous and it is extremely kind of confident about its future in a post-colonial world.
um i will do that i just think it's slightly pointless trying to describe these photos without at least giving someone a look at them if you want to move them around these are the studio photographers right and do the rounds meanwhile you know in apartheid south africa
you need to use photography as a form of struggle.
And I've picked two photographers in particular.
One is a guy called David Goldblatt, who spent a lot of time filming in the mines and around the mines, particularly closed mines, mines that had been shut,
and poor black communities who've been shunted off into the so-called independent kind of homelands, Bantustans.
That is one of them.
And here you get a sense of extraordinary, I think of it as heightened realism, really, because photography is of such high quality, and the resolution's so intense, and very often the depth of field's so exquisite that these are beautiful objects in themselves.
And yet, because of big depth of field,
They're maximally committed to recording everything they can that's in front of the photographer.
And the other guy I've picked is Ernest Cole, who was a young and up-and-coming photographer at Drum magazine.
