The FLN, the ruling party, their film unit gave her permission to make a film there.
And that was a short, very beautiful film, I think, about Portuguese colonialism and the people who stood up against it.
Then she was asked to make a film, she asked to make a film of her own about the armed struggle in Guinea-Bissau, and the Algerians let her go off with their stuff, their equipment and so on, entered Guinea-Bissau in clandestinity, shot her film, came back, edited it to Algiers, edited it, presented it to the FLN film unit,
who then said, we can't be doing this, I'm afraid.
It doesn't work for us.
And there was a fantastic Rao, partly because she'd cast the character that she, it was going to be a fiction, central character was going to be a woman fighting in the ranks of the guerrillas.
And this caused a lot of trouble.
And in the end, she had to leave Algeria.
and that the rush is, well, the edited film has never been found since.
It's very interesting.
Some people say it's still around in Algiers.
But she went on to,
You know, she stuck to her guns through the struggle in Angola and made a big feature film that brought her to prominence, I think, in 1972 called Sanvis Anger, a few years before Independence, and went on to always to be preoccupied by colonialism and also by race.
But she had very, very firm ideas that she wasn't going to be boxed into a corner by this.
She made a lot of different documentaries for French television and
and was always very sharp when people tried to kind of define her as an anti-colonialist, pure and simple.
She said, you know, I'm just a person who thinks about various kinds of inequality and various kinds of injustice.
And of course, colonialism has taken up a lot of my time, but, you know, don't fence me in.
Yeah, her daughter came to London and we screened some of Melrose films, which I kind of highly recommend, yeah.
